Champagne Resort golf course
Situated in the central Drakensburg in KwaZulu Natal is the Champagne Resort golf course that offers golfers the spectacular scenic views of the Cathkin and Champagne Peaks. This championship golf course was originally a basic nine-hole course but has since been upgraded with a redesign from South African senior professional Hugh Baiocchi to an 18-hole layout that finally does justice to the spectacular setting of the Champagne Resort golf course.
The Champagne Resort golf course is the second best golf course in the Drakensburg and Natal Midlands area which is building a reputation as a leading golfing destination in South Africa. This course is considered to be one of the most scenic courses in South Africa and is a fair challenge for the lower handicap but also a “playable” golf course for the occasional weekend golfer.
The Champagne Resort itself is the ultimate holiday getaway as it is situated two hours outside of Durban. The Champagne Resort consists of a luxury hotel as well as extensive sports and recreational facilities including the 18 hole Champagne Resort golf course that offers the golfer more than a challenge but also a scenic experience that is reward enough. All these facilities at the Champagne Resort make for a relaxing holiday that most can only imagine.
Playing the course
The Champagne Resort golf course was designed by Hugh Baiocchi to be enjoyed, it is a fairly open course but still has numerous hazards. The fairways are perfectly manicured Kikuyu fairways which are framed by light rough and many various trees. This does not mean that the Champagne Resort golf course is easy; misdirected shots will be punished by the 84 bunkers that line the fairways and guard the bent grass greens. Water hazards along the course are a prominent feature and the course becomes especially tricky in the wetlands.
The signature hole of the Champagne Resort golf course is the equally thrilling and daunting start tee off that is the longest par-five in South Africa. The tee off at the start of this 605 meter par-five will afford golfers a view of the ravine and clubhouse. This elevated tee stands taller than the Champagne Resort golf course clubhouse and your drive will have to carry over the Strekspruit Ravine as well as the rough to the fairway that beckons from below. The green is situated around the corner of a dog leg left where there are two bunkers that come into play.
The 19th Hole
The Champagne Resort golf course has a clubhouse that is magnificently appointed with panoramic views of the surrounding mountains as well as the perfectly manicured greens that can be from a wooden deck set with tables and chairs protected from the sun with umbrellas. The clubhouse at Champagne Resort golf course also boasts a large fully stocked pub, light meals are served in the golf lounge and on the magnificent verandah which overlooks the Champagne Resort golf course and the beautiful mountain scenery beyond.
The clubhouse is easily accessible from the Champagne Sports Resort and access to motorized golf carts and a well stocked Pro-Shop is on hand. The well-stocked Pro-Shop provides you with the perfect opportunity to cater for all your golfing needs. The clubhouse is also equipped with a gentleman's as well as a ladies locker room which is fully equipped with showers, hand basins, toilets and secure lockers.
Champagne Resort golf course offers golfers the opportunity for an exciting challenge no matter what your handicap is. Let the relaxing atmosphere of the Champagne Resort golf course allow you to enjoy a well deserved golfing break.
