Durban Beachwood golf course

Lying parallel to the Indian Ocean coast is the Durban Beachwood golf course which is now part of the Durban Country Club. The course was originally designed by George Waterman and Laurie Waters and was later redesigned by South Africa's very own Gary Player. The redesign was initiated in 1994 to upgrade the standards of the course to the championship standards of its sister course the Durban Country Club.

The Durban Beachwood golf course is a top class golf course and is a good test of golf with a relatively narrow design. The fairways are tree-lined and high embankments with thick brush and some bush on some of the fairways demand great accuracy. Although the Durban Beachwood golf course borders the Indian Ocean it does not have the meandering fairways that are so common to Link's Courses especially those of the Country Club Course.

Playing the Durban Beachwood golf course

All the the fairways except for the par 3 second run parallel to one another in a N-NE / S-SW direction. The fairways are challenging straights with bunkers and some severe slopes. There are 41 bunkers around the greens and 33 fairway bunkers that are awaiting wayward shots.

The front nine, of the Durban Beachwood golf course, which includes the tenth hole before the halfway house is considerably tight through the protected Mangrove swamp but the back nine is more forgiving as the course opens up from the 11th. This par four 383 meter demands accuracy of the tee as the the fairway is well protected on the right by thick bush while two sand bunkers surround the greens.

The par four sixth is a signature hole for the Durban Beachwood golf course and is both demanding and long. Here you will tee off from an elevated tee to the fairway 20 meters below which can be tricky. This hole is 410 meters long there is a dogleg to navigate as well as a stream, bushes and a water hazard on the way to the green which is protected by bunkers on the right.

The Durban Beachwood golf course was taken over a few years ago by the Durban Country Club and is maintained with the same diligence.
