Durban Country Club
The Durban Country Club is situated in the city of Durban, Kwa-Zulu Natal along the coast of the Indian ocean, this golf course is diligently maintained and consists of two courses. The Durban Country Club course which was established in 1922 and the Beachwood course which was previously known as the Beachwood country club but now forms part of the Durban Country Club. Both the courses can be said to be championship courses and the Durban Country Club and in particular the par 5 third on the Durban CC course which is considered the best in the world.
The Durban Country Club course
The Durban Country Club course has hosted the South African Open Championship 14 times and was ranked as the number four golf course in South Africa in 2004. The course is classified as a semi-links course and is a demanding course to score well you are required to play well. Strong on shore winds that blow through the valley of the both scenic and demanding course that was curved into the dunes.
The Durban Country Club course is classified as an extremely challenging course to most skilled golfers. The Durban Country Club course was designed for the more experienced golfer, it is a course that will be enjoyed but never mastered and beginners should not attempt to learn golf here. Narrow fairways, steep slopes, tropical bushes tall trees and large bunkers together make for a challenging course. The par 5 third is considered the best in the world as you play from a hight tee to a narrow fairway with a predatory bunker on the left is some of the reasons why this hole is so popular. The Durban Country Club course is definitely geared for the more experienced golfer.
The Beachwood Course
Previously known as the Beachwood Country Club it is now part of the Durban Country Club and lies 2 kilometers north of the Durban CC. The green in total has 41 bunkers around the greens and 33 fairway bunkers. Most of the fair ways are lined with trees and four of the holes have water features. The fairways are long and narrow and require precision tee shots and lay ups and provides a challenge for the handicap.
Function Venues:
At the Durban Country Club there are a variety of function rooms that can be used according to your needs these include:
- The Belvedere room:
This is the largest of the function rooms and can accommodate from 200 to 280 people, it overs a view of the bowling green, swimming pool and the Indian Ocean.
- The Athlone room:
This room directly overlooks the 18th green and can accommodate between 70 and 100 people.
- The Waterman room:
This room remembers one of the sons of Durban Country Club, Mr. Waterman who was one of the original architects and holds the Waterman cup and can accommodate between 120 to 140 people.
- The Green room:
This room is decorated with 1923 watercolors and is ideal for small parties and exhibits.
- The Card room:
This room offers total privacy from all the other function rooms and accommodates between 10 and 30 people. It offers beautiful views of the course and the popular Durban suburb, Morningside.
- The Ballroom:
This is a large ball room and is ideal for large parties, it is also used as an en-suite buffet area for the Belvedere room when needed. The two rooms are divided by eight arches which makes the two rooms separable or integral if required.
