What makes South African golf courses so great?
South Africa offers everything any golf enthusiast could want. With the
perfect climate for courses to grow and be maintained, it also gives the
golfer a lot of sunshine under the African sun to enjoy a round. The best
thing however is the world-class golf courses that have been built in this
country allowing golfers to be spoilt with a great selection of top golf
courses. Every province boasts a wide range of truly amazing golf courses.
The Free State Province has hosted many National Amateur Championships at
its Bloemfontein Golf Club. At the same time if you are in the area, you
should definitely not miss out on popping in at the Oppenheimer Park and
the Schoeman Park golf courses. The Northern Province is quite large and
you may have to travel some distances to visit the golf courses in this
province, but at least they are well worth it. The Sishen Golf Club is
tucked away on the border of the province yet is rated as one of the
country’s finest golf courses.
The Western Cape has a variety of golf courses and styles. With Seaside
Links and parkland layouts you will be spoilt for choice in this region.
The Royal Cape Golf Club is the oldest golf club in Africa, built in
1885it, like most of the golf courses in the area, allows you to play
against the beautiful backdrop of Table mountain. This area also presents
the wine country and golf in here is a beautiful thing. The golf courses
are predominantly parkland and designed by Gary Player and Jack Nicklaus.
The SAA South African Open is often played at the Erinvale Country club.
Another are that is truly amazing is home to the famous Links Golf
course, home to the President’s Cup in 2003. You could really spend your
entire holiday there with the real quality golf courses in the area. The
area also presents the greatest grouping of top rated golf courses all
within 40 minutes of each other. Playing relaxing and soaking up the view
would mean you are obviously at the world class Humewood GC in Port Elizabeth. Bobby Locke the famous Golfer once said that if the British Open could be played anywhere else in the world it should be here. Natal is known as the golf coast of South Africa. It is literally covered in first-class golf courses for every level of player. The Durban Country Club is very well known and is often rated as the best course in the country.
Some other musts are the Zimbali Country Club and Mount Edgecombe CC.
The game only gets better amongst the dozen or so golf courses between the
Wild Coast Country Club in the south and the Amamzimtoti in the north with
the majestic Indian Ocean making up a spectacular view. The North East offers some great golfing and safaris for a unique experience to the inland course. Here the water hazards are home to crocodiles and hippos with a lot more than just the golf to enjoy take your time at these golf courses, relishing in the Leopard Creek Country Club as a very exclusive venue to play a game. The Gary Player Country Club is home to the annual Nedbank Golf Challenge, South Africa’s premier golfing event. Regularly rated as South Africa’s number one course, you simply cannot miss out a game on this one.
So if you like playing inland at higher altitude where the ball flies
further, or the test of a coastal course, the selection is truly
spectacular and varied. We have only mentioned a few golf courses here,
but there are many world-class golf courses in the country that have
featured on the European PGA Tour and the local Sunshine Tour. Perhaps
this is why South Africa has produced so many first rate golfers, because
our golf courses are just too good to stay off of.
