Rich in history and challenges

The Glendower Golf club is situated in Johannesburg and is without equal in South Africa as a test of golf. The Glendower Golf club was opened in 1937 and was designed by English golf architect Mr. Allison and the task of construction was assigned to South African professional golfer A.F Tomsett. In 1973 the club was proclaimed a nature reserve to preserve the vast and excellent bird life that can be found on the grounds.

The Glendower Golf club hosted the South African Open in 1987, 1993 and 1997 but after only two years of being opened the golf club hosted their first major tournament; the Transvaal Open championship. The Glendower Golf club endeavors to be recognized as an unrivaled competitor offering an impeccable golfing experience that exceeds members and guests expectations.

The Glendower golfing experience:

The fairways of the Glendower Golf club are excellent and feature many hazards including 85 bunkers and water hazards come into play at 11 of the holes. One of the best par-fives that will be found anywhere is the aesthetically pleasing second-hole. This shot requires an accurate tee-shot to a fairway that has hazardous spots both on the left and the right as well as a water hazard next to the green.

The course is a well-designed, carefully planned 6 770 meter course, that has 18 holes and a par 72 for the course in total. The fairway grass is Kikuyu and the greens grass is bent grass. During the 80's the Glendower Golf club under went reconstructive surgery as all 18 holes were rebuilt and reshaped, adding new tee-positions and water hazards. This transformation made the Glendower Golf club one of the most beautiful and challenging golf courses in South Africa; at present the club is rated number one in Gauteng and number four in South Africa by the Complete Golfer. The Glendower Golf club is conveniently located within 10 minutes of the Johannesburg International Airport.
