The Hans Merensky Golf Course

The Hans Merensky Golf Course is situated in Phalaborwa and the eastern boundary of the course lies on the boundary of the Kruger National Park. This championship course was designed by the legendary Robert Grimsdell and stretches over a vast area of indigenous bush which is interspersed with tranquil pools and velvet greens. The main attraction of this course is the visiting wildlife and in the drier winter months the course is often visited by elephants, antelopes, giraffe, warthogs and even the big cats. The Hans Merensky Golf Course was opened in 1967 and the hilly course has been very well maintained since then.

The land on which the Hans Merensky Golf Course once formed part of the Kruger National Park and therefore there are magnificent bushveld trees that line the fairway. Another feature is that there are form backdrops to the holes which gives the impression that the course is much older than 30 years. From your first step onto the Hans Merensky Golf Course you will realize that this is a truly African experience as you see the monkeys leap above the enormous trees near the clubhouse which is said to have the biggest thatch roof in the country. The clubhouse for the Hans Merensky Golf Course which is raised to overlook the 9th and 18th holes offers unsurpassed views to the golfer.

Playing the Hans Merensky Golf Course

The Hans Merensky Golf Course has hosted numerous tournaments including amateur as well as professional which is a measure of its widely acknowledged quality. There is not a hole on the course that can be considered a weak hole but from the forward trees the novice golfer would thoroughly enjoy the round. The 8th hole which is a par three, 155 meter long hole is particularly attractive as this hole is guarded by a water hazard with the added hazard of crocodiles. Although the Hans Merensky Golf Course is an all over fine course and the singling out of hole is not necessary but the four par fives on the course especially the 16th were a pulled or hooked drive could well land in the Kruger National Park. The 8th and the 17th holes are exceptional as they both offer the golfer the over water to well-bunkered greens.

The Hans Merensky Golf Course is the ideal golf course for any golfer that has a passion for both the wild and golf. The course is a very playable course for all golf skill levels. Every year a tournament for the Vodacom tour is played here at the Hans Merensky Golf Course.
