Lost City Golf Course
The 72 par Lost City Golf Course has impressed golfers again and again
the world over. Yet another Gary Player designed desert style course gets
players entranced with the classic bushveld mountainous backdrop to the
perfectly manicured lawns. The barren waste bunkers are another unique
characteristic of this remarkable Lost City Golf course and the frequency
with which they occur strongly encourages and rewards straight drives,
punishing anything slightly off. The Lost City Golf course is spectacular
with even Gary Player having mentioned on a few occasions that this is
one of his favourites. The Lost City Golf course varies from 6 983 metres
on the back tee to 5 953 metres off the front tee with the trickiest hole
being the 13th. Rather unlucky to many for sure. This par 3 hole is
shaped like the African continent, and as you stand ready to tee off,
you look down to see the 9 bunkers and water hazards closely guarding
the hole. Oh, and then of course to throw in a little bit of added
intrigue, there are 38 crocodiles in the water hazard some almost 2
metres long. Naturally it is suggested that golfers refrain from
retrieving their balls. This is rather typical of the effort that went
into the Lost City Golf course, with no expense spared to transform
this bushveld into a golfing oasis. The last nine are rather like
going to a lookout point to take in the views. Playing the game from
high to low really makes it a lot more entertaining and here the
downhill is definitely evident on the eleventh, thirteenth, fourteenth,
fifteenth and sixteenth holes, being played from an elevated tee
sending the ball flying. Watching the spectacular African landscape
in the background as you watch the ball sailing over the course
sometimes takes your breath away.
Of course the Lost City Golf Course forms part of the Sun City complex
with it’s Valley of Waves entertainment complex. This area is the perfect
place to let the family roam around whilst you enjoy the game. The
complex is situated just north of Rustenburg in the North West Province.
The area is semi desert and the course was carved out of the existing
landscape. The first nine as mentioned before is more of a desert style,
but the last nine were designed to be a sort of Out of Africa safari
type course. With a fence being the only thing separating golfers from
the wild animals n the Pilanesberg Game Reserve. The key to the
experience, according to Gary Player, was to feel part of the country.
Even the club house is based on the Zimbabwe Ruins and gives a classic
African feel to the entire encounter.
The place even houses the Titleist Golf Academy. This exclusive
academy is run by a professional golfer known as Teddy. He is very
experienced in the game and in fact has over twenty years of teaching
experience under his belt. The academy offers courses to groups and
individuals and Teddy gives care and specific advice that has changed
the game of all who go through the academy. He can even give you video
feedback on your game that will help you see what he sees and in this
way better your swing or stance that seems to be pulling you back in
the game a bit. He offers tuition for every level of golfer, so if
you’re keen to better your game or even step in as a beginner, give
them a call on +27 (0)14 557 1555.
The green fee on this course is R495 for eighteen holes. For any
