The Sabie River Golf Course
Alongside Nelspruit and White River, the Sabie River Golf Course is one of only four 18 hole layouts in the exquisitely beautiful Mpumalanga lowveld. This 18-hole course was designed by Peter Matkovich and Dale Hayes and the golf course is a dream course which is rated among the top ten golf courses in the country. The Sabie River Golf Course was originally designed 57 years ago as a nine-hole course for personal use by the local farmers but was redesigned in 1992. Duncan Cruickshank and Compleat golfer magazine refers to this course as a “user friendly” 18-hole course.
The Sabie River Golf Course is one of the countries important water courses as water is a big factor on this course with five dams resulting in fourteen holes sporting water hazards. The courses main dam alongside the 14th and 15th holes is home to big game such as crocodiles and hippos.
Playing the Sabie River Golf Course
The Sabie River Golf Course boasts knitted kikuyu fairways throughout the year due to a good irrigation system. As said above there are water hazards that come into play on 14 of the 18 holes and silicon sand bunkers guard most of the greens. There are many existing trees along the course and recently there have been more trees that have been planted. The rough is short and the Sabie River Golf Course is fairly hilly and very scenic which can either be challenging or fairly forgiving depending on tee and pin placements.
The 11th hole which is a par four is aligned with water all the way up the right hand side of the fairway. The 13th, another par-four, requires the skill of the golfer to negotiate the trees to be able to reach a raised green. The 16th hole of Sabie River Golf Course is a challenge for the golfer as you will have to use your skill to negotiate with trees, waste bunkers as well as water hazards which are well guarded by wildlife such as hippo and crocodile.
To be able to enjoy the golfing experience at Sabie River Golf Course you are required to wear appropriate golf attire and you are not required to have a handicap unless you are entering a competition.
