Trevor Immelman Profile
Trevor Immelman is one of South Africa’s most celebrated golfers. Born
in Cape Town he is a true Cape Townian with the relaxed temperament and
calm demeanor. His ability to keep his head down and concentrate has
earned him many titles. The Trevor Immelman profile begins in 1984 when he
picked up his first set of golf clubs at the age of five. From that
moment he was destined for greatness, following the lead of his brother
Mark who was teaching golf. Immelman was only 12 when he was off scratch
and then went on from 13 to 17 to play the African Junior Golf
Association Tour. At 17 he played in Chile’s Eisenhower Trophy for the
South African team in 1996. That same year he made it to the finals three
times only to suffer defeat at the US Junior Championship, The Amateur
Championship at Royal St. George and the New Zealand Amateur Championship.
Trevor Immelman picked up the ’97 South African Amateur Championship
and was the British Amateur runner-up in the same year. In ’98 he took the
US Public Links Championship and the South African Airways Open
Championship. He took a lunge into the professional circuit in 1999 and in
2000 he played the Challenge Tour in Europe, which is the second tier
professional tour. Here he came in at the number ten spot on the Order of
Merit. In 2001 he got the title of full member of the European Tour where
he has made it into the top twenty in the Order of Merit three times.
From here he went on to claim three wins on the European Tour. Locally
he has done extraordinarily well. Like the legendary Gary Player in
1976-77, Trevor Immelman became the only other man to guard the South
African Airways Open title in 2004.
2003 May just however, have been the best year in Trevor Immelman’s
profile. This is the year in which he won the WGC World Cup for South
Africa with partner Rory Sabbatini. The 2004 BMW Golf Digest Awards
awarded Immelman and Sabbatini the Outstanding Performance Award for
their success in the World Cup. In the beginning of the year, he even won
The Royal Bank of Scotland Shot of the Month Award for a 180 yard wedge
on the 72nd hole to set him on his path to victory in his first South
African Airways Open Championship and it was in the Sunshine Tour of
2002/3 that he won the prestigious Order of Merit. It was a good year for
his whole family too. Trevor’s father, Johan Immelman, was appointed
Commissioner of the Sunshine Tour in the same week of Trevor’s success on
Kiawah Island in December. A perfect end to a brilliant year. Trevor
Immelman was on the International Team when it lost the Presidents Cup in
2005. He received a PGA Tour exemptions for 2006 and 2007 based on this
Presidents Cup appearance and in 2006 he went on to win his first PGA
Tour at the Cialis Western Open. This victory took him up into the top
15 of the Official World Golf Rankings.
Immelman got married on the 6th of December to Carmenita, his childhood
sweetheart. His first child came right in the 2006 Open Championship and he
had to leave the competition to be home for the birth. Perhaps 2006 was a
great contender then for his best year too, because he got into the top ten
of the PGA Tour money list and got the title Rookie of the Year.
The Trevor Immelman profile finishes with his promise to play even better
golf in the years to come. Trevor Immelman has certainly followed in the
steps of the other South African greats playing 34 tournaments of which he
has won 4. He has had 10 Top Ten Finishes in those tournaments. Trevor
Immelman has completed 123 rounds with his lowest round a 63 and a stroke
average of 70.75.
